Meta description gives short description about your page. If you have something in Meta description that would give good answer or it matches what the user types in or something along those lines then they will go through your site. The purpose of a meta description for your page is to encourage search users to click your link. 

Search engines say they don’t use meta description as a ranking algorithm but Google uses CTR (click through rate) which means the more clicks you get the high rank you gain not matter you are a good result or not. So meta description really help to gain users clicks and get space in SEO.
